On February 5, the Supreme Court of Tajikistan sentenced journalist and mother of two young children, Rukhshona Hakimova, to eight years in prison on charges of treason. This harsh sentence, issued behind closed doors and without transparent evidence, has raised serious concerns both domestically and internationally.
Tajik Youth for the Revival of Tajikistan strongly condemns the verdict against Rukhshona Hakimova. We consider it an unjust and politically motivated action that threatens freedom of expression. Depriving a young mother of her two small children, one of whom is still an infant, is inhumane and a blatant violation of human rights.
We call on the people of Tajikistan to stand up for the rights of Rukhshona Hakimova and demand justice with a unified voice. Silence in such moments signifies acceptance and support for injustice.
At the same time, we appeal to global powers and international human rights organizations to impose severe sanctions on the government of Tajikistan. International pressure is the only way to compel this repressive regime to stop persecuting journalists and silencing the voice of truth.
