A Brave Fighter and Symbol of Loyalty to National Ideals

Suhrob Zafar, the imprisoned leader of the political movement “Group-24,” is one of the most notable figures in the political struggle and social awakening of Tajik society. Today, on his first birthday behind bars, we are reminded of the open injustice and the oppression carried out by the government against those fighting for freedom. Instead of listening to the thoughts and proposals of the opposition, the government has made the practice of suppressing and imprisoning them a common policy. This is a clear indication of the absence of freedom of speech in the country.

In the early stages of his activism, especially during the political protests in Moscow, Suhrob Zafar boldly stood at the forefront. He was able to mobilize young migrants for political struggle and played a crucial and effective role as the leader of the movement. With strong determination and unwavering resolve, Suhrob became a prominent figure among the migrants, guiding them effectively in their political endeavors.

After the martyrdom of Umarali Kuvvatov, the leadership of “Group-24” was assumed by Sharofiddin Gadoev. Despite all efforts, Gadoev could not successfully lead the movement, resulting in its fragmentation. In such a situation, Suhrob Zafar stepped forward again and took on the leadership of the movement with a new team. Through his renewed call, he was able to revive the movement, breathe new life into it, and preserve its influence both domestically and internationally.

It is worth noting that the government of Tajikistan, in an illegal act and through intense pressure, kidnapped Suhrob Zafar from Turkey and brought him back to Tajikistan. This act is another example of the blatant oppression carried out by the government of Emomali Rahmon, which seeks to eliminate those who fight for freedom and justice. Suhrob Zafar was illegally transported back to Tajikistan without any trial or justifiable reasons, and under political pressure, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison on fabricated charges. This action not only violates international laws but also reveals the distinctive approach of the Tajik government, which silences political opponents through oppression and threats.

Suhrob Zafar, who dedicated all his efforts to justice and the freedom of the Tajik people, was imprisoned for his political activities and quest for freedom. Not every person can speak such words in the face of court proceedings. Suhrob Zafar found himself in a position where every fighter for justice must face threats and oppression. He courageously expressed his thoughts with integrity, despite the wrongful accusations, making a statement that was not only for himself but also for the future of every justice-seeking individual in the country.

“I did not take bribes, I did not steal from anyone, I have not killed anyone, I have not done anything against human law that I should regret, and our organization is neither terrorist nor extremist.”
— Suhrob Zafar

These words, spoken amidst severe oppression and pressure, not only serve as a testimony but also as a symbol of bravery, loyalty, and Suhrob Zafar’s unwavering belief in his ideals. Today, his birthday is not just a personal date but a symbol of resilience, strength, and hope for the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom.

We call on all citizens of Tajikistan not to forget such brave sons of the nation. Their value and self-sacrifice are of vital importance. The time has come for us to not only hope for others but to take action ourselves for the freedom of fighters and the well-being of the people. If we look at history, how did the people of India free Gandhi? Before his imprisonment, Gandhi might not have been the most perfect or influential leader, but the people of India recognized his value, and this recognition turned him into a great scholar and heroic leader.

If today we do not free our own Gandhis, like Suhrob Zafar, from prison, we will only have ourselves to blame for our historical enslavement, continuing to live under the erroneous existence and oppression of Rahmon’s government. The freedom of such personalities is not only a moral responsibility but a step towards the freedom and independence of the nation. Only through unity, action, and recognition can we change our destiny.

Happy birthday, a true patriot and lover of the homeland!

With respect,
Tajik Youth for the Revival of Tajikistan
