Today, we commemorate the birthday of Umarali Kuvvatov, a prominent figure who is remembered not only by his family and friends but by the entire society of Tajikistan as a fighter for justice and reform. Had he lived, he would have turned 56 today.
Umarali Kuvvatov was known in Tajikistan as a successful entrepreneur. He was active in various economic sectors and played a significant role in the development of some key enterprises. At the same time, he closely observed the social and economic challenges faced by the people and made efforts to improve their lives.
Kuvvatov was not only a person with strong will but also had a broad social vision. He maintained close ties with the political and economic elite of the country, and these relationships allowed him to recognize the structural corruption and inequalities within society. When he realized that this corruption was hindering the country’s development, he distanced himself from the government and turned to independent reformist activities.
Although initially known as a business partner of government circles, intense disagreements with key figures in the government and the corrupt system led him to adopt a critical stance. As a result, pressures and threats against him increased, forcing him to leave the country.
In exile, Umarali Kuvvatov dedicated himself to political activities. In 2012, he founded the political movement “Group-24,” which aimed to fight for political freedom, social equality, and to combat the corruption of the Tajik government.
His movement reached the people of Tajikistan through social media and other platforms, delivering bold messages for comprehensive change. With clear words and harsh criticisms of the Tajik government, he called on the people to awaken politically. Kuvvatov especially emphasized the need for youth to be active for freedom and justice and to contribute to the development of a just society.
Despite severe pressures and government efforts to silence him, Kuvvatov continued his work. Unfortunately, in 2015, he tragically lost his life in Istanbul, Turkey, due to poisoning. His assassination, which was politically motivated, was condemned and highlighted the serious risks faced by opposition figures abroad.
Umarali Kuvvatov remains a symbol of heroism for his struggle for justice and freedom. Despite his tragic death, his thoughts and ideas continue to live in the hearts of those who believe in freedom and justice. The “Group-24” continues to operate today, advancing his values.
May his soul rest in peace, and may his memory always be cherished!
With respect,
